FIRE and POLICE DEPARTMENTS SEEK THE PUBLIC’S HELP
Since mid-June, the Nevada Community Fire Department has responded to five suspicious fires in and around Nevada. Three of these fires occurred in unoccupied structures in the neighborhood of 8th Street and P Avenues. In a fourth incident, newspapers were intentionally set on fire at the steps of a residence in the 9th Street and K Avenue areas. Both the fire department and the Nevada Police Department have open fire investigations into these incidents. The fifth fire occurred north of Shipley on 595th Avenue. The Story County Sheriff’s Office is assisting the fire department with that investigation. The State Fire Marshal’s Division and the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s Intelligence Bureau are also assisting with these investigations.

June 14th machine shed fire, 25556 595th Street, 9:11 P.M.
July 6th unoccupied house fire, 1601 8th Street, 2:33 A.M.
July 8th, attempted arson fire, 1110 9th Street, 10:30 A.M.
July 28th, storage building fire, 882 P Avenue, 8:21 A.M.
September 9th, storage building fire, 1539 8th Street, 12:03 A.M.
The Nevada Community Fire Department and the Nevada Police Department are asking for the public’s help in these investigations. If you have information relating to anyone of these incidents or if you see suspicious activities anywhere, please call 911 immediately. You can also contact the Nevada Fire Chief and the Nevada Police Chief during office hours at 515-382-4593. You may also send and email to the fire chief at nevadafire@midiowa.net or the police chief at pdchief@mdiowa.net. The State of Iowa also operates the Arson Hotline at 1-800-532-1459. Anonymous tips or information are welcome. Information coming into the Arson Hotline may qualify for a reward.
